Tornado Warning

Still morning after
whipping wind so strong
it wrapped the trees around each other and unwrapped them
faster than the flick of a mockingbird's tail.
A white pine
snapped in two, another
leaning like a dancer on stilts.
Wind so strong it sucked the fog
up the mountain,
plastered leaves on road signs,
drove robin-sized hail
into the sides of cars. And this morning
the birds poh-tee-wheated,
the trees
set out to grow bigger
and greener,
the cat climbed onto my chest in the semi-
dark, crying for breakfast.
